Place and Personal Meaning at at the National Art Education Association National Convention Museum Education Preconference

March 1, 2017

How can photographs in a museum connect to our own lives? This teaching demonstration for museum educators during NAEA is targeted at teen or young adult audiences and addresses their need to personally identify with works of art to gain meaning. I will facilitate a scaffolded conversation about one photograph at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Then, participants will work with a partner to select a photo that most resonates with a story from their own life. Using visual elements from the artwork (modeled in the aforementioned dialogue), they will work together to compose a story or poem which they voluntarily share with the group.
